Using population health data to identify those at greater risk during pregnancy due to pre-existing health conditions and in some cases, health inequalities is vital in supporting better pregnancy outcomes. 

A report [1] commissioned by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, states that: 

“Maternal outcomes are particularly poor for socially disadvantaged women affected by pre-existing physical or mental health problems; those who misuse substances; those who have a lower level of education; those who are overweight, undernourished or poorly sheltered; and those who are at increased risk due to the threat of abusive and unsupportive partners, families and peers.”

Delegates will hear from Catherine McLennan, Programme Director at Cheshire & Merseyside Health & Care Partnership about how their groundbreaking Women’s Health and Maternity Programme (WHaM) is using population health data within a pregnancy dashboard to identify a broad spectrum of issues that could affect pregnancy outcomes. These include poverty, poor education, social deprivation and minority ethnic groups for whom significantly higher mortality rates in pregnancy are well documented. 

Improved pregnancy outcomes are better for the child and the mother and also deliver savings that reduce the burden on the health and care system.
