Driving Smarter Antibiotic Prescribing in Primary Care with BRIT2
28th April 2026 , 12:00 to 13:00
We welcome Dr James Higgins, GP, Binnington Surgery, Stockport, to host our webinar discussing, driving smarter antibiotic prescribing in primary care.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) remains one of the most pressing global health threats of our time. In England, over 81% of antibiotics are prescribed in primary care, with substantial variation between clinicians in prescribing patterns, case mix, and appropriateness. Most GPs (95.8%) prescribe at least one antibiotic above the median of their peers. This represents a significant opportunity for improvement through targeted, data-driven interventions.
BRIT2 is an innovative digital tool now deployed across primary care systems to support better antibiotic prescribing. BRIT2 uses intelligent algorithms to analyse two years of patient-level prescribing data, identifying where antibiotics have been issued for a wide range of specific clinical indications. It draws from NICE guidance to flag potentially areas for prescribing optimisation and presents actionable insights to clinicians via interactive reports.
Dr. Higgins will demonstrate how BRIT2 enables practices to interrogate their data across multiple dimensions—by indication, drug, demographics, comorbidities, and clinical activity. The platform’s ability to highlight deferred and repeat prescribing patterns is especially valuable, helping practices intervene more effectively and personalise care plans. The functionality to drill down to patient-level data supports proactive, timely action and enables shared decision-making with patients.
By supporting clinicians to align prescribing with best practice guidance, BRIT2 aims to:
-
Reduce overall antibiotic volume through more targeted use.
-
Increase awareness and use of deferred prescribing.
-
Identify and manage inappropriate repeat prescriptions.
This webinar is a call to action for primary care across England to harness the power of population health management and digital intelligence tools like BRIT2. Real-world insights from the Stockport experience will be shared, demonstrating how a data-enabled, patient-centred approach can support antimicrobial stewardship and safer prescribing.
